Betty Rowe had been living alone and independently for two years before she was no longer able to drive due to medical reasons. Without a car, Betty was concerned about being isolated from friends and community groups, particularly with the Government recommendations to self-isolate.
She knew that now more than ever she needed a supportive community around her and so she made the move to Acacia Park Villages, a Karidis Retirement Village, in late April.
âIt was the right time,â Betty said.
âI made the decision very quickly and Iâm really happy I did. My family are happy, and they encouraged me.â
Betty is one of four new residents who moved into a Karidis Retirement Village during April, with another five set to move in this month.
Her new village is perfectly positioned between the city and the sea, and features a community centre, swimming pool and library, and lovely neighbours whoâve already made her feel at home.
âIâm looking forward to being able to enjoy meeting up with people and doing things, having coffee with them at the community centre.â
âIâve met the neighbours each side of me and theyâve just been really friendly and welcoming, and helpful as well.â
Similarly, for Bruce and Kylie Thyer, the newest residents of Avista Glenelg, it was important for them, in a time of social isolation, to join a connected community with good accessibility, the option of in-home support services and in a convenient central location.
âIâm in a wheelchair and so access was terribly important for us. Being so close to the action, I can just hop on my wheelchair, go down the lift and Iâm right in the middle of Glenelg so that was very important.â
An artist, Kylie has plenty to keep her busy at home, while her husband Bruce volunteers for the local council.
âWe felt as though we could live the sort of life that suited both of us here. We can join in as many things as we want to, or we cannot join. We always have the choice.â
Karidis Retirement Villages operates independent living villages for over 55s across Adelaide, connecting residents with a community that perfectly suits their lifestyle. Karidis Retirement Villages is part of Karidis Corporation, a family run business that has become recognised over the past 50 years as one of South Australiaâs leading property developers.
