Sue Atkin has always enjoyed living by the beach. Her first home with her husband of 50 years was an apartment in Somerton Park and they also owned houses in Adelaide’s southern suburbs.
Despite Adelaide always being home, Sue also fell in love with Sydney and lived there for more than 20 years – always right by the sea. After her husband passed away in 2018, Sue knew that she wanted a new beginning in a lively, friendly community and she had a choice to make.
“When my son started a business in Sydney around 20 years ago, we decided to follow him there and I ended up falling in love with the eastern suburbs around Bondi,” Sue said.
“I thought about staying but I knew that I needed to downsize to a smaller place with more support and Sydney property prices were just ridiculous!”
Ultimately Sue decided to return to Adelaide, where she still has great family support, including a son, a daughter and grandkids. In the end, it was her daughter who found her the ideal place to live.
“When I came back to Adelaide, I was living in a big house we still owned in Flagstaff Hill and it was far too isolated for me and I was struggling to cope on my own,” she said.
“When my daughter found Avista Glenelg, she knew that it was the perfect place for me with the ideal mix of convenience, community and support that I was after. There’s so much to do here and it’s in such a great location in Glenelg.”
In the end, it was an obvious choice for Sue. No longer able to drive, Avista Glenelg is walking distance from a wide range of amenities, including shops, chemists, cafes and the beach. It’s also just 10 minutes to the airport and with family still in Sydney, it makes regular visits a lot easier.
“One of the best things about Avista Glenelg is that it’s really your own home. I had family over from Sydney to stay last Christmas and because I have two bedrooms and a second toilet, there’s plenty of room. My daughter even comes over most nights for a drink and I have great friends here now too,” Sue said.
In fact, on Sue’s last visit to Sydney earlier in the year, two of her friends decided to ‘house-sit’ for Sue to get a feel for what Avista Glenelg is like. In the end, both loved it so much that they decided to move in too.
Sue’s advice? “don’t leave it too late, move while you’re still able and I can’t recommend Avista Glenelg enough.”
